‘Letting go a little improves life. Letting go a lot brings happiness and joy’ - Jim McGregor
Restorative Yoga is a deeply therapeutic form of yoga which helps you to relax, rest and restore the mind and body completely. Not to be confused with sleep, restorative yoga is ‘active relaxation’ where with the aid of blocks, bolsters, blankets, eye pillows and straps, the body is fully supported and placed in specific postures which encourage both the physical body and mind to release and let go.
Restorative yoga allows for complete physical, emotional and mental release. The unique aspect of restorative yoga is that during this deep rest, the bodies autonomic nervous system switches from the ‘fight or flight’ sympathetic-dominance to the ‘rest and digest’ parasympathetic-dominance. This is where rejuvenation begins and the benefits of this deep relaxation include, release of muscle tension, reduction of blood pressure, improved digestion, elimination, fertility, insomnia and fatigue.
Anyone can practice restorative yoga and I feel it is essential in a world which is obsessed with ‘doing’ and tech-overload that we all take the time to make both physical and mental space for the many benefits which come from stillness and rest.
Restorative yoga improves ones health and is particularly useful for the stressful times of life. It helps to treat the symptoms of chronic stress such as fatigue, low energy, burn out, anxiety and depression. It restores harmony to the mind and body leaving one feeling relaxed, with renewed energy and most importantly balanced mentally, emotionally and physically.
To relax, is to live well.
