About Mel

Mel has been practicing yoga for over 15 years and teaching corporate and retreat clients since 2011. 

Between the age of 27 and 33 years Mel travelled extensively across America, mainly staying on Native Reservations, and world wide to surfing spots in Hawai’i, New Zealand and Australia.  It was during this time Mel was introduced to and became increasingly interested in alternative healing therapies and spending time in and by the ocean.   Back in London a close friend took Mel to her first Ashtanga yoga class with renowned teacher John Scott, and she was hooked.

Mel found yoga to be both the most practical and effective practice to bring her strength, health, calm and headspace whilst working as a director in a busy media job.

Fascinated with the mind-body connection and rejuvenating benefits of yoga, Mel decided to commit further and studied in 2007 with Lara Baumann on the 200 hour Yoga Alliance Quantum Yoga Teacher Training, a yoga practice based on Ayurvedic principles. 

 After which she travelled to Kerala to study for six weeks with AyurGreens Ayurveda clinic to further her understanding of Ayurvedic theory, diagnosis, and therapies.  From Kerala she traveled north to Rishikesh and stayed at the Anand Prakash Yoga Ashram in Rishikesh, experiencing traditional Ha-Tha yoga teachings.  Mel has been teaching on Surf Sistas Surf and Yoga Retreats for the last three years and recently taught at Soul & Surf, Kerala.

In 2017 Mel completed the Relax and Renew® Restorative Yoga teacher training with Judith Hanson Lasater. Mel is currently studying to become an Ayurvedic Lifestyle and Nutrition Consultant with the Ayurvedic Institute UK. 

She constantly continues to increase her knowledge by attending workshops with renowned, inspiring teachers including: Bo Forbes, Seane Corn, John Scott, Jeff Phenix, James Philip, Yogi James, Danny Paradise, Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, Yogi Ashokananda.

Mel hopes that in sharing the techniques and teachings of yoga,  each student can learn tools which will help them to reconnect to their breath, helping them to reduce stress, relieve anxiety, build strength, bring health and happiness.  Encouraging students to listen to their own body, trust their own feelings and experience during the practice, Mel hopes to encourage students to become their own healer on the mat.



Teaching Styles

Vinyasa  :: Vinyasa translates as ‘breath led movement’, ‘to place in a special way’.  Mel teaches a mindful, compassionate and fun vinyasa practice, which focuses on the breath, alignment and is created to take into account seasonal changes and students energy levels.   Classes include a combination of;  asana, pranayama, mudras, Vedic chanting, meditation and relaxation. 

Mel tailors classes specifically for surf and yoga retreats, making them more strengthening and energising pre-surf and more restorative post-surf, taking into account tropical heat or the coolness of a Cornish cliff top!

Rest & Restore Restorative Yoga ::  Mel teaches private one to one restorative yoga sessions with clients in London.  These include a pre-assessment of the client so as a personalised restorative sequence can be developed specifically for the for individual.  To find out more about the benefits of Restorative Yoga and to book an introductory session please click here.
